Audio conversion
Which format is for what, and which should you convert to? Below is a DJ's comparison and seven ready-made conversions. Everything runs in your browser; your files are never uploaded.
Conversions
- FLACMP3Free up USB space or play your tracks on devices without FLAC support: convert to 320 kbps MP3. Title, artist, cover art and key tag are carried over.
- FLACAIFFThe safe lossless format for Rekordbox and CDJs: convert FLAC to AIFF. The audio stays bit-identical; tags and cover art are carried over.
- FLACWAVFor software or devices that can't open FLAC: convert to WAV with bit-identical audio. If you need tags in your DJ library, AIFF is the better choice.
- WAVAIFFGet away from WAV's weak tag support: the same audio, in AIFF with title, cover art and key tag.
- WAVMP3Shrink recordings and mixes: convert WAV to 320 kbps MP3 at roughly a quarter of the size.
- AIFFMP3A portable copy of your AIFF collection: 320 kbps MP3 with tags and cover art.
- M4AMP3For players and devices that can't play M4A: convert to MP3. M4A (AAC) is already lossy, so re-encoding costs a little more quality.
The formats side by side
| Format | Type | Size / min | Tags | DJ note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FLAC | Lossless, compressed | ≈ 5–7 MB | Full (Vorbis comments + cover) | Lossless at about half the size; some older CDJs can't play it. |
| WAV | Lossless, uncompressed | ≈ 10.6 MB | Limited; DJ software reads them partially | Opens everywhere but is weak at carrying tags. |
| AIFF | Lossless, uncompressed | ≈ 10.6 MB | Full (ID3 + cover) | Lossless and tagged; the safe choice for a DJ library. |
| MP3 | Lossy | ≈ 2.4 MB | Full (ID3 + cover) | Small and plays everywhere; 320 kbps is transparent for most ears. |
| M4A | Usually lossy (AAC) | ≈ 1.9 MB | Full (MP4 tags) | Common in the Apple ecosystem; some devices can't play it. |
Converting MP3 or M4A to FLAC, WAV or AIFF doesn't bring quality back: the discarded audio is gone, the file only gets bigger. That's why we don't offer such a page.
